Ankle Sprains

Expert diagnosis and treatment of ankle sprains to help you recover quickly and prevent future injuries.

Ankle Sprains

An ankle sprain is an injury to one or more of the strong bands of tissue, called ligaments, that help support the ankle. A sprain commonly occurs when the foot twists, rolls, or turns beyond its usual range. This may happen during sports, exercise, walking on uneven ground, or a simple misstep.

Although many ankle sprains improve with time and appropriate care, some injuries are more serious than they first appear. An evaluation by a qualified healthcare professional can help determine the extent of the injury and guide a safe return to normal activities.

Common Signs of an Ankle Sprain

Symptoms can vary depending on which ligament is injured and how severe the sprain is. You may notice:

  • Pain, especially when putting weight on the foot or moving the ankle

  • Swelling around the ankle

  • Bruising or skin discoloration

  • Tenderness when the area is touched

  • Stiffness or reduced movement

  • A feeling that the ankle is weak or unstable

These symptoms can also occur with other injuries, including a fracture or tendon injury. For this reason, persistent or significant symptoms should be assessed rather than assumed to be a simple sprain.

When to Seek Care

Consider seeking medical care if pain or swelling is substantial, walking is difficult, or symptoms are not improving. Prompt evaluation is especially important after a fall, collision, or forceful twist, or if you heard a pop at the time of injury.

Urgent assessment may be appropriate if the ankle appears deformed, the foot feels numb or unusually cold, or you cannot bear weight. Repeated sprains, ongoing ankle instability, or pain that continues after the initial injury may also benefit from evaluation.

What an Evaluation May Involve

A healthcare professional will typically ask how the injury occurred, when symptoms began, and whether you have injured the ankle before. The ankle and foot may be examined for swelling, bruising, tenderness, range of motion, strength, and stability. The clinician may also assess how you walk and check nearby areas for signs of another injury.

Imaging is not needed for every ankle sprain. Depending on your symptoms and examination findings, an X-ray or other imaging study may be considered to look for a fracture or a different cause of pain. The evaluation can also help classify the injury and determine whether additional support or follow-up is needed.

Treatment Approaches

Treatment depends on the injury’s severity, your activity needs, and your overall health. Early care may include protecting the ankle from further injury, reducing activities that increase pain, and using cold therapy or elevation when appropriate. Compression or a brace may be recommended for support, but it should be used as directed.

As pain and swelling settle, gradual movement can help restore flexibility. A healthcare professional may recommend exercises to improve strength, balance, and ankle stability. In some cases, a walking boot, crutches, or other support may be used for a period of time. More significant injuries may require a structured rehabilitation plan and follow-up care.

Returning to Activity

Return to work, exercise, or sports should be gradual. You may need to be able to walk comfortably, move the ankle through an appropriate range, and perform activity-specific movements without a concerning increase in pain or swelling. Stopping rehabilitation too soon or returning to demanding activity before the ankle has recovered may increase the risk of ongoing symptoms or another sprain.

Understanding Your Options

Ankle pain after a twist or fall should not be ignored if it is severe, persistent, or affecting your ability to walk. A qualified healthcare professional can evaluate your symptoms, explain the likely cause, and discuss appropriate next steps. Individual treatment recommendations vary, so an in-person assessment may be needed to understand your injury fully.
