Neuromas

Specialized diagnosis and treatment of neuromas, providing relief from nerve pain through comprehensive conservative and surgical treatment options.

A neuroma is a painful or irritated nerve. In podiatry, the term often refers to a Morton neuroma: thickened tissue around a nerve in the ball of the foot, commonly between the third and fourth toes. Despite the name, it is generally not a cancerous growth. Foot pain can have other causes too, so an evaluation can help clarify what is contributing to your symptoms.

At Associates in Medicine & Surgery, podiatry care for a suspected neuroma may begin with learning where and when your symptoms occur, followed by an examination of your foot. Your clinician can discuss next steps based on your symptoms and findings.

Symptoms and when to seek care

People with a neuroma may notice burning, tingling, sharp pain, or numbness in the ball of the foot or nearby toes. Some describe a feeling like a small pebble is inside the shoe. Symptoms may be more noticeable when walking, standing, or wearing tight or high-heeled shoes, and may ease after taking shoes off or resting. Symptoms vary, and these experiences do not by themselves confirm a neuroma.

Consider arranging an evaluation if pain or unusual sensations persist, keep returning, interfere with walking or daily activities, or do not improve with simple changes to footwear. Seek prompt medical advice for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, a significant injury, or concerning changes such as marked swelling or skin color changes. A qualified healthcare professional can advise you about symptoms that need urgent attention.

What an evaluation may involve

Your clinician may ask when the symptoms began, where you feel them, what activities or shoes affect them, and whether you have had similar problems before. They may ask about your health history and examine your foot, including its movement, sensation, and areas of tenderness. Sometimes gentle pressure or movement of the forefoot is used to see whether it reproduces your symptoms.

Not everyone needs imaging. If the cause is uncertain or another problem needs to be considered, a clinician may recommend imaging such as an X-ray, ultrasound, or MRI. These tests can help assess the foot, but the choice depends on your individual situation. An examination and any test results are considered together rather than relying on one finding alone.

Treatment approaches

Treatment often starts with approaches that reduce pressure on the affected area. Depending on your needs, a clinician may discuss:

  • Footwear changes: Shoes with a wider toe box and lower heel may reduce squeezing at the front of the foot.

  • Activity adjustments: Temporarily changing activities that aggravate pain may help you manage symptoms while the foot is assessed.

  • Padding or shoe inserts: A pad or orthotic may be considered to change how pressure is distributed under the foot.

If symptoms continue, your clinician may discuss other options, which can include an injection or, in selected cases, surgery. These approaches are not appropriate for everyone and can have risks and limitations. A healthcare professional can explain the options, expected recovery considerations, and how they apply to your circumstances. No treatment can guarantee a particular result.

Planning your next step

Foot pain can arise from several different conditions, and the right plan depends on its cause and on your health and activity needs. Avoid trying to diagnose a neuroma based only on a symptom description. If discomfort is persistent or affects your mobility, a podiatry evaluation can help you understand what may be contributing and whether further assessment or treatment is appropriate.
